Standing With Nepal: How You Can Help After the Floods

On 26 August 2026, flash floods swept through parts of northern Nepal, destroying homes, roads and bridges and cutting off communities from essential services. The Nepal Red Cross Society is responding on the ground with emergency supplies, clean water, shelter and first aid, while humanitarian organizations continue assessing the full scale of the disaster.

This isn't Nepal's first experience with devastating floods and landslides. Over recent years, monsoon rains, flash floods and landslides have repeatedly damaged homes, roads, bridges, agriculture and critical infrastructure across the country.

But behind every headline is a human story.

A family that has lost its home.

A farmer whose fields and livestock have been swept away.

A child whose school has been damaged.

A community suddenly cut off from clean water, healthcare and communication.

And for many people, recovery doesn't end when the floodwaters disappear.

Why Nepal Needs Support Right Now

The current emergency is creating urgent humanitarian needs across affected communities.

• Emergency shelter — Families whose homes have been destroyed or damaged need safe temporary accommodation and essential supplies.

• Clean water and sanitation — Flooding can damage water systems and increase the risk of disease.

• Food and essential supplies — Many affected families have lost access to basic necessities.

• Medical assistance — Damaged roads and health facilities can make it difficult for people to access urgent medical care.

• Support for children — UNICEF reports that more than 17,000 children currently need humanitarian assistance following the floods.

• Long-term recovery — Roads, bridges, homes, schools and other infrastructure will take much longer to rebuild than it takes for the news cycle to move on.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has launched a CHF 25 million emergency appeal to support the Nepal Red Cross Society's response. Current assessments indicate that around 93,000 people may have been affected, with assessments continuing in hard-to-reach areas.
